“Hip-Hop And Comics: Cultures Combining” Panel Discussion And Performance To Take Place At The University Of Oregon In Eugene On May 20th
this multi-tiered event brings together graphic artists and musicians for a panel discussion on the ties between these two vital creative cultures, and an accompanying live musical/visual performance

On Friday, May 20th, the University of Oregon will play host to “Hip-Hop & Comics: Cultures Combining”, a first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary event exploring the longstanding creative crossover between Hip-Hop culture and comic book cultures, featuring conversations with and performances from some of the musical and visual arts’ most groundbreaking and visionary creators.

The first part of the event will be an afternoon seminar at the University’s Straub Hall, looking at how comics and Hip-Hop grew from modest origins to achieve global impact, and how they inspired and influenced each other in the process – not just within rap music and comic books, but also through skate/street fashion, graffiti, animation, breakdancing, kung fu films, and other related expressive forms.

Patrick A. Reed (editor of Depth Of Field Magazine) will moderate and curate the visual presentation, and the panel will consist of:

  • Chali 2na (rapper, member of Jurassic 5, photographer and visual artist)
  • Mix Master Mike (turntablist and producer, member of The Beastie Boys and The Invisibl Skratch Piklz, four-time world champion DJ)
  • Eric Orr (visual artist, graphic designer, creator of Rappin’ Max Robot, the first Hip-Hop comic book)
  • Angelina Villalobos AKA 179 (graffiti/street artist, muralist, painter, community activist)
  • Sloane Leong (comic creator, illustrator, animation artist)

The second part of the event will be an evening performance featuring musical sets from Mix Master Mike and Chali 2na; live drawing visuals from Eric Orr, 179, and Sloane Leong; and support from DJ Food Stamp, DJ Billy and DJ Patrick A. Reed.

Both portions of this event are free, all-ages, and open to the public.

The panel discussion will take place from 2-4pm at Straub Hall, 1451 Onyx Street, Room #156. The live performance will follow from 7-9pm at Level Up, 1290 Oak Street.

Hip Hop and Comics is a UO College Scholars Event, co-sponsored by Comics Studies, EMU Cultural Forum, the School of Music and Dance, the Department of English, the UO Cultural Forum, the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, the Oregon Humanities Center, and Level Up Arcade.
